Shelter starts with the limits of your balcony.
Workshop questions

Before you fit anything

Most useful balcony questions begin with “what are the limits?” These answers help you prepare, not bypass local approvals or professional assessment.

Can renters install a balcony privacy screen?

Sometimes, but check the lease, building rules and local requirements first. Obtain written permission where required. Removable products can still affect appearance, loading, fire safety and shared property.

Are no-drill screens automatically safe?

No. Clamps, tension fittings and freestanding bases still transfer forces. The screen, attachment and supporting structure must be suitable for the location and approved where required.

How can I add privacy without losing all the light?

Identify the specific overlooking angle and screen that sightline rather than the entire opening. Compare slats or permeable materials in position, while checking wind suitability and permissions.

Will mesh keep my balcony private at night?

Not necessarily. Privacy depends on the mesh, viewing angle and relative lighting. A brightly lit balcony may be visible through material that looked private during the day.

Can a shade sail keep the balcony dry?

Not reliably unless the complete system is designed and installed for rain protection. Some shade fabrics are permeable, and wind-driven rain can enter from the sides. Do not improvise slopes or anchors.

What is the safest screen height or ballast weight?

There is no universal answer. Exposure, dimensions, support, building capacity and local requirements must be assessed for the actual installation.

Can I put deck tiles over the existing floor?

Only after checking permission, loading, thresholds, waterproofing compatibility and drainage access. Tiles must not conceal unresolved leaks or obstruct outlets.

Which materials work best near the sea?

Choose product-specific materials and finishes rated for the actual chloride exposure. Compatible fasteners, accessible cleaning and regular inspection are important; no metal is maintenance-free.

Do balcony screens need fire approval?

Fire requirements depend on the location, building and proposed assembly. Ask the building manager and relevant authority which product evidence and permissions are required.

What should I do before severe weather?

Follow official warnings, building instructions and product operating limits. Store loose items and retract or remove temporary products in good time where instructed. Do not enter an exposed balcony to adjust equipment during hazardous conditions.
